Spetses is situated close to the southern shores of Argolida and holds the distinction of being the southernmost and westernmost island in the Argosaronikos Gulf. It serves as an ideal destination for both short getaways lasting a few days and extended vacations that can span many days, throughout the entire year.

With its unique and captivating natural beauty, abundant attractions, rich cultural heritage, and cosmopolitan ambiance, Spetses manages to draw a significant number of both Greek and international tourists.

The island played a pivotal role in the Greek Revolution of 1821, contributing significantly to its success. Notably, the renowned heroine Laskarina Bouboulina was born on this island.

Spetses, renowned for its distinctive mansions and unique architecture, is often described as the most aristocratic island in the Argosaronikos archipelago. On Spetses, the primary modes of transportation are horse-drawn carriages and motorcycles, as motor vehicles are strictly prohibited.

Spetses Attractions & Surrounding Area

Spetses boasts a plethora of attractions. In Peukakia Square, you’ll find the house museum of Laskarina Mpoumpoulina, featuring a beautifully carved ceiling in the drawing room. Nearby stands the neoclassical residence of Spetses’ benefactor, Sotirios Anargyros, a structure dating back to the 18th century, adorned with two prominent Egyptian sphinxes at its entrance. Poseidonios Square is graced by the imposing statue of Laskarina Mpoumpoulina.

Further inland, you’ll discover the town hall, a traditional architectural gem complemented by a delightful garden. The mansion of Hatzigiannis Mexis, Spetses’ first governor, preserves the island’s rich cultural history.

Don’t forget to visit the Cathedral of Saint Nikolaos, featuring a beautifully crafted belfry, and the war memorial within its courtyard. For panoramic views, ascend to the Monastery of Saint Pantes and the church of Saint Triada, perched on a high point in the town.

Beyond the town of Spetses, the island offers numerous other attractions. The Mpekiris cave, situated on the southwest coast, served as a primary refuge for the fighters during the Greek War of Independence in 1821. Heading west to the Agia Marina area, you’ll find remnants of an important prehistoric settlement from the proto-Greek period, along with artifacts from the late Greek period.

Spetses boasts a variety of picturesque beaches with pristine aquamarine waters. On the southern coasts, the popular beaches of Agioi Anargyroi, Agia Paraskeyi, and Xylokeriza stand out. The tranquil shores of Vrellos, Zogeria, and Ligoneri on the north side of the island are equally enchanting. Additionally, you can enjoy swimming at the charming beaches of Kounoupitsa and Agios Nikolaos, near the town of Spetses.

While on the island, be sure to savor the exquisite local cuisine, indulge in delicious marzipans, and try the specialty known as “fish Spetsiota style.” For entertainment, Spetses offers a wealth of bars, taverns, restaurants, and clubs.

How to get there

By Sea: Daily ferry boats, catamarans, and flying dolphins depart from Piraeus Port to Poros. The ferry boat journey takes approximately 2.5 hours, while the flying dolphin ride is about 1.5 hours. Poros is also well-connected to other Saronic Islands such as Nafplio, Ermioni, Epidavro, and Porto Heli.

By Land: If you prefer a road trip, you can reach Poros by road via Nafplio and Galatas. A ferry boat is available to transport you to Poros from there.
