March is characterized by wearing a bracelet made of red and white thread or yarn, twisted or woven, on March 1st in Greece.
Martia, or March, is an ancient custom believed to have roots in Ancient Greece, specifically in the Eleusinian Mysteries. A thread, known as the Crocus, was tied by the initiates of the Eleusinian Mysteries to their right hand and left foot.
From March 1st to the 31st, children are adorned with bracelets on their wrists made of twisted white and red thread, known as the March bracelet. According to folk tradition, March protects children’s faces from the first Sun of Spring, thereby preventing sunburn. These bracelets are crafted on the final day of February and worn on the first day of March before departing from home.
